Bunch of Mottos
- A participation in Design Doha Biennale.
- Msheireb Downtwon Doha, 2024.
Bunch of Mottos is an interactive light installation that takes advantage of the flexibility of M-otto, a modular plastic system that can be utilized to create complex forms without using any connecting device. A series of lights with different shapes will hang from the ceiling and will respond to the presence of the audience in two different ways. The initial interaction hinges on technology: the cluster responds to visitors' proximity via sensors, altering the lights' behavior accordingly. This delay profoundly impacts user experience and the perception of light effects. It facilitates smoother transitions, fostering a heightened sense of comfort and convenience within the space. |
In the 1990s, BMW pioneered the "follow-me-home" lights feature, allowing headlights to remain illuminated for a brief period post-car exit before gently dimming. This innovation swiftly gained popularity, eventually becoming a staple across numerous car manufacturers. Inspired by this technology, the installation replicates a similar delayed effect, mimicking the familiar rhythm of light activation and deactivation akin to natural bodily reactions. The resultant light effect infuses the installation with vitality and responsiveness, evoking a semblance of personality or emotion.
The second interaction will be through collaboration. A part of the installation will be fully customizable: during a series of small workshops the audience will be invited to design new elements that will be included in the installation. The installation will mutate during the course of the Biennale and the final piece in the end will look very different from its original composition.

Two types of sensors are integrated into the space. One is triggered by individuals exiting the area, catering to the gallery's frequent foot traffic in Msheireb City. Thus, even bystanders outside the installation witness its dynamic response, smoothly activating as if the installation awaiting someone to bring it to life. Another sensor type is tailored for those entering the installation, activating and deactivating in tandem within two distinct sections. The lights are meticulously arranged in a zigzag pattern, creating captivating visual reflections of the installation elements. Comprising 36 smart-programmed lights, this arrangement seamlessly transitions through various sequences, augmenting the installation's visual impact.
