"The Box of Memories" is a Syrian souvenir project, born from the Mold Making and Casting initiative, featuring a mass-replicable box. Resembling a cup and designed as a pen holder, it boasts four main faces and a bottom. Each face is intricately connected to a website, functioning as a memory collection platform. Users can upload various memory types—music, photos, videos, or text—linked to specific faces. The cube, equipped with four QR codes, not only tracks the location and time of website visits but also serves as a collective platform for individuals displaced by war.
The Box of Memories transcends its role as a poignant Syrian souvenir project; it emerges as a groundbreaking research initiative, reshaping survey and collective research methodologies.
Every aspect is crafted with meticulous detail, including the box's packaging, which is made of leather, reminiscent of the traditional Bokja. In the context of this project, Bokja symbolizes the wrapping of various items, such as clothing for travel or weddings, or even food. For displaced individuals forced to hastily flee their homes, using a piece of fabric to gather essential items becomes a practical necessity. The circular leather pieces of the cube's packaging are uniquely fashioned, transforming from a two-dimensional circular surface into a modern Bokja. This innovative design sends a powerful message to every bearer of this box, encapsulating the memories of each displaced individual within their makeshift Bokja. Carrying the remnants of their past, these fragments of days gone by are held on their backs, wrapped in the fabric of their journey. |
